Question
When we downloaded an updated cOS Core license, we noticed that several license parameters have been changed or have disappeared. What happened?
Answer
In newer licenses, some values has been removed as they are either copied from other license values or, if the parameter does not exist, cOS Core will assume that it should use the default value. Some examples of license parameters that may look different after a license upgrade are the following:
Max GRE tunnels
Old value = Unlimited
New value = N/A (blank)
The above does not mean that the system no longer supports GRE tunnels, it means that unlimited is the default. There is no license restriction for GRE tunnels, so if the license does not contain this parameter cOS Core will assumes the default value.
Max PPP tunnels
Old value =10
New value = N/A (blank)
The above does not mean that the system no longer supports any PPTP tunnels but that it will take/copy the amount of PPTP tunnels from the value of the “VPN tunnel” license parameter. So if the license parameter for “Max VPN tunnels” is 10, it means that you can use 10 PPTP tunnels, 10 IPsec tunnels, 10 SSL VPN tunnels, L2TP etc.
Note: PPTP should not be used as a VPN solution as it’s encryption algorithms are no longer secure. A better alternative would be IPsec (IKEv2) or OneConnect.
PPP Clients/Servers Available
Old value = True
New value = N/A (blank)
The default value is set to be “True”. Only if the value deviates from the default would there be any need for the license to contain an entry.
PROP_OSPF (or Multicast, traffic shaping, load balancing and many more)
Old value = True
New value = N/A (blank)
The default value is set to be “True”. Only if the value deviates from the default would there be any need for the license to contain an entry.
