What is VM Hardware Compatibility?

VMware virtual machines have a VM Hardware Compatibility setting that describes the hardware of the virtual machines, the Virtual Machine supplied for cOS Core 14.00 is based on a VM Hardware version 9, there is usually no need to upgrade VM version, for more information about different VM versions see this KB from VMware: https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1003746.

The following is quoted from the VMware KB article “Upgrading a VM’s HW version is not recommended unless features in the new version are needed.”

What to think about when upgrading VM version of cOS Core?

If upgrading from VM version 9 to a later version VMware has remove the default serial port that was implicitly defined, before starting an upgraded Virtual Machines you must add a serial port to the virtual machine or cOS Core will not start.
