E20A BIOS update

Last modified on 15 Sep, 2022. Revision 18
The listed Intel issue AVR53, in the Intel C2000 Processor Errata, is causing some units not to boot. The internal eMMC disk device is connected to an USB to eMMC controller that fails to enumerate part of the power up cycle. After an BIOS update to coreboot_Clavister_E80_E20-1.0.0.4 this issue should disappear.
Affects
Eagle E20
Status OK

Warning:

Based on the nature of the problem a BIOS upgrade may not be possible in all cases.
If that is the case the only alternative is to RMA/replace the unit (if still within valid subscription/warranty).
The upgrade procedure will validate the flash image consistency and if any errors are found it will abort the
upgrade without making any changes.
Always back-up your configuration before proceeding!

How to check BIOS version and update the E20 BIOS

Check BIOS version

  1. Run the command "sysmsg" in the console view (baud-rate is 9600 if you haven't changed the default).
  2. Check the BIOS version, should be higher than Clavister_E80_E20-01.00.00.02
  3. If needed continue and create a BIOS update USB-stick

Create BIOS update USB-stick

  1. Download BIOS update image file at: https://my.clavister.com/downloads/tools-utilities/?id=ba873901-7d9e-eb11-8308-005056956b6b (requires login)
  2. Download and install the Etcher software: https://www.balena.io/etcher/
  3. Insert an empty USB-stick in your computer (minimum 2Gb).
  4. Run the Etcher software to flash the image file to the USB-stick.

Update the BIOS version

Warning:

Based on the nature of the problem a BIOS upgrade may not be possible in all cases.
If that is the case the only alternative is to RMA/replace the unit (if still within valid subscription/warranty).
The upgrade procedure will validate the flash image consistency and report if any errors found making the upgrade impossible.
Always back-up your configuration before proceeding!

Procedure

  1. When Etcher is done flashing the USB-stick, insert the USB-stick into one of the USB-ports on the E20A.
  2. To be able to validate the update process connect to your E20 console (baud-rate is now 115200) before starting the upgrade procedure.
  3. Power on the system.
  4. The system will power off the system by itself after the upgrade procedure is finished.

Check BIOS version after update

  1. Connect the E20 device to your console (baud-rate is 9600 if you haven't changed the default).
  2. Turn on the E20 device.
  3. Run the command "sysmsg" again.
  4. Now the BIOS version should show Clavister_E80_E20-01.00.00.04.
